Episodes & Menu (Menu 5 out of 5) (Episodes 2 out of 5)
The menu screens of these dvd's are always entertaining, and are hosted by the old Alfer himself. He really is quite funny, even after all these years. Paul Fusco in my mind really is a genius.
Now onto episodes. I am not referring to the actual episodes themselves. I'm rating the way the dvd was put together as far as episode order goes. I really like this set, but the editing of the dvd is horrible. For one, an episode is missing, yes you heard me right. There was an episode that aired on October 30, 1989 according to episodeguides. The episode was called He Ain't Heavy, He's Willie's Brother. It's the first appearance of Willie's brother Neal. And you find out things such as that he used to be overweight, and now he's thin (Thus the title of the episode), and he comes to stay with the tanner's. In the dvd set however, it picks up one episode later (The episode is titled The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face) where he left, and got his own apartment . The episode starts with Alf happy that Neal is finally gone. You don't actually see Neal even show up for the first time, but according to that episode, he's come and gone, and come back in that episode and finally meets ALF.
I know that they tried to compile this season according to actual airdates, and missed the mark because a lot of these are really out of order. Episode 5 on this set is called Mind Games, is actually from season 3, and is included in that set. If that ain't bad enough, there are duplicate episodes in the set. On disc 3 you see 2 episodes, which are I GOTTA BE ME, and WHEN I'M SIXTY-FOUR, and are on disc 4 also. I thought maybe it was a 2 part episode or something, but nope. I guess they wanted the dvd's to look like they featured more episodes than were actually there. But to me is just bad editing. They should have left out Mind Games because they already released it on season 3. And they should have just left the discs the way they were minus the 2 episodes on disc 3, and just feature them on disc 4 instead. The least they could have done was put in the missing episode. So I hope they re-release this one day, and discontinue this nightmare of a set. The episodes are entertaining, but I can't seem to get past the missing episode, and duplicate episodes. It makes it confusing to watch, and annoying to look at. You tend to think that a company like Lion's Gate is a professional company, not a company that threw this set together in 5 mins, and didn't do their homework, as far as episode order goes.
Closing Statements
Overall I am happy with this set, and I would give it an overall rating of 3.5 out of 5. If they had the missing episode included, no duplicate episodes, and the proper order of the episodes, I would give it a 4 out of 5. If they upgraded the sound, I would give it a 5 out of 5. It was a great show, and still is, but I wanna end by saying don't think that by buying this set, that you'll have the complete series like I thought. Without that episode, you only have 99 percent of the series. I still recommend buying it because it's all that's available. Although I hope that Universal somehow has the rights to this show, and properly releases the unedited version of the show, instead of the Syndicated versions that are on this set. It's worth the price. I paid 26.99 for mine, so it's worth the laughs that you get from the Old Alfer.
